Phil David was 17 years old when he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, and he quickly became a squad leader while serving in Vietnam.

Many amphibious assault ships, including the USS New York, USS Oak Hill, and Johan de Witt, participated in the training. 8,000 Marines and sailors trained throughout Onslow Beach on land and water.
