A coalition of health insurance companies is vowing to make changes to the prior authorization process, after years of patients and providers’ complaints over a system they say delays care and endangers people’s health.

"Prior authorization is often denied because a provider has not provided all of the necessary information," Moran told Newsday on Monday. "It's often something key that the plan needs, and the plan has to follow up and get a request. They follow up to get additional information."

The announcement on prior authorization comes months after the killing of UnitedHealthcare executive Brian Thompson, which sparked widespread criticism about insurance denials.
