After Pope Leo XIV was elected pontiff by the College of Cardinals, President Donald Trump posted on social media, “It is such an honor to realize that he is the first American Pope. What excitement, and what a Great Honor for our Country. I look forward to meeting Pope Leo XIV. It will be a very meaningful moment!”

Donald Trump has implied that he was involved in the election of Pope Leo XIV, who was born in Chicago, as the new pope.

Joining him at the meeting on was Secretary of State Marco Rubio, also a Catholic, Vance spokesperson Luke Schroeder said.
