New Mexico Gov. Lujan Grisham has declared a state of emergency​ in the city of Española and nearby areas in response to what she calls "a significant surge" in violent crime and drug trafficking.

There is no “immediate” assignment to deploy the National Guard, the governor's office said, but that standard language in the governor’s executive order “is there if needed.”

The declaration enables the release of up to $750,000 in emergency funding to bolster local law enforcement and stabilize communities.
