The independent body that redraws the state’s political maps isn’t perfect, many Republicans say. But they prefer that to the gerrymander that Gov. Gavin Newsom seeks to offset one proposed in Texas.

The redistricting battle is intensifying with California Gov. Gavin Newsom announcing he will retaliate against Texas’ partisan redraw of the U.S. House district maps with bluer maps of his own state’s districts.

Gov. Gavin Newsom and Texas Democrats jointly promoted California’s plan to redraw congressional lines and offset a redistricting scheme in Texas. The proposed map is expected to be made public next week.
