By its standards, the streamer's lineup of film originals in January is surprisingly slight. There are still a few Netflix-exclusive movies worth recommending this month, though, and the service is making up for its slim pickings of originals with a batch of exciting streaming acquisitions that is practically bursting at the seams with modern classics from the past 30 years.

The top shows and movies new on Netflix this week are once again headlined by the return of a surprise hit from 2023.

There are eight episode s of The Recruit season 2 and they'll all stream on Netflix from Thursday, January 30. Netflix has brought back its 2022 comedy-drama series Mo for a second and final season this week.

Fast Five is when the franchise took a left turn and never looked back, leaving the quaint street racing drama behind for reality-bending action thrillers. It’s also the second highest-rated Fast & Furious movie, behind only Furious 7, Paul Walker’s final film role.

This month’s selection of movies includes an underseen rock opera, one of the best movies of the 2000s, a paranoid thriller about American misdeeds abroad, and a nice pre-Oscars catch-up on one of Timothée Chalamet’s best performances.

These Netflix shows are among the best available, but that doesn't mean they're ones that come with regular recommendations.
