A crucial National Weather Service office, battered by cuts, is trying to put on a brave face as tornado season peaks.

Anticipating a hot and dry Fourth of July, the Newport city council voted this week to ban personal fireworks this summer.

The proposed measure also would grant the weather service temporary hiring authority for positions related to public safety.
