National Guard troops were reporting to the Washington, D.C. armory on Tuesday night as they take the first steps to deploy under President Trump's plan to target crime and homelessness in the city.

While it is mostly called to respond to state-level emergencies, the National Guard has also been called to enforce law. The DC National Guard is primarily under federal control.

Trump’s order comes after he federalized California National Guard troops and sent hundreds of active-duty Marines to Los Angeles in June.
