The District of Columbia could face a $1 billion budget shortfall after House Republicans introduced a continuing resolution that excludes a longstanding provision allowing the city to continue spending under its fiscal year 2025 budget.

Republicans omitted a standard provision approving the District’s budget in a stopgap funding measure needed to avert a shutdown before the end of the week. The result would be a 16 percent cut.

The bill, also known as a continuing resolution, now moves to the Senate, where D.C. officials hope Democrats will help them defeat the measure.
