Halfway finished building a sailboat, the woman who rowed across the Atlantic Ocean has another legendary task ahead: recreating furniture built by former President Jimmy Carter. "I don't know what I'm gonna build yet," she said. "We have to wait 'til the children and grandchildren pick the furniture that they're gonna take."

Carter, at 100 the nation’s longest living president, died Dec. 29 at his home in Plains. The scene this week in Washington, at the National Cathedral Thursday and as he was lying in state for three days at the Capitol, was unlike anything the country had seen in years.
President Joe Biden, the first sitting senator to endorse Carter’s one and only presidential campaign in 1976, eulogized him at Wednesday’s state funeral in Washington. Carter had been receiving hospice care at his home in Plains, Georgia, since 2023 for an undisclosed illness.

On Tuesday, the late president and his family arrived in Washington, D.C., after Carter lay in repose for two days at the Carter Center, which he and late first lady Rosalynn Carter founded after their departure from the White House.
