GM Just Hired a Self-Driving Pioneer: Anderson’s Next Move Could Disrupt the Auto Industry
General Motors is hiring former Tesla executive and co-founder of autonomous driving technology company Aurora Innovation, Sterling Anderson, as its chief product officer (CPO). According to TechCrunch on Monday, Anderson will be responsible for all of General Motors' product lines and will be responsible for the entire product cycle, from hardware to software, services, and user experience (UX). He will report directly to Mark Lewis, General Motors president of North America, who is in charge of product strategy. Anderson, who was previously the director of Tesla's Autopilot, co-founded Aurora in 2017 and attracted the attention of major investors such as Sequoia Capital, Amazon, and T Rowe Price. He left the company shortly after launching a commercial autonomous truck service in Texas. Anderson said he joined General Motors because he saw an opportunity to make a positive difference in the lives of millions, expressing his intent to revolutionize the vehicle experience and enhance road safety. Mark Lewis, president of General Motors North America, emphasized the need to strengthen the integration of software and hardware and accelerate the development cycle in response to rising customer expectations. He noted that Anderson is well-suited for the role, citing his experience in both automotive engineering and software innovation. Meanwhile, General Motors is pursuing vehicle electrification and modernization under the leadership of CEO Mary Barra, and has been pursuing a strategy of simultaneously developing electric and autonomous vehicles along with internal combustion engine vehicles.
