LOS ANGELES — Farhan Zaidi, the San Francisco Giants’ former president of baseball operations, is back with the Dodgers’ organization — where he was the GM before coming over to the Giants — so he was watching this weekend’s battle for first place at Dodger Stadium with more interest than most.

On the same day as nationwide protests against President Donald Trump and as Los Angeles continues to see massive protests against sweeping immigration raids from Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Dodgers attempted to stop a Spanish version of the U.S. national anthem from being sung before facing the Giants.

Logan Webb tossed seven innings of two-hit ball, Casey Schmitt hit his first career grand slam and the San Francisco Giants defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-2.

Starting Friday night, the Giants will start a three-game set with the Dodgers, with first place in the National League West on the line. Yes, we’re not even halfway through the baseball season — have you even put in an All-Star ballot yet? — but did anyone expect the Giants to be in such a position last October? What about in January?
