Right-hander Justin Martinez will undergo Tommy John surgery, Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Friday, June 13, on his weekly radio appearance with Arizona Sports 98.7 (KMVP). Martinez will miss the remainder of the season and a large chunk — if not all — of next year, as well.

Earlier this week, Martínez landed on the IL and the Diamondbacks announced his injury as a sprain of his right ulnar collateral ligament. A sprain, by definition, involves some degree of stretching or tearing.
