One of the strongest earthquakes ever recorded has hit off Russia’s sparsely populated Far East. It sent tsunami waves into Japan, Hawaii and the U.S. West Coast.

A tsunami advisory was also issued for parts of Alaska and the entire West Coast, stretching from the California-Mexico border up to the Alaska-British Columbia border.

The Fukushima Daiichi plant was the site of a major nuclear disaster following the devastating 9.0 magnitude Japan earthquake and tsunami in 2011. TEPCO added that there have been no injuries or abnormalities recorded at the plants, but that they will continue to monitor tsunami warnings.
