After a week of uncertainty for Illinois hospitals and clinics over an executive order seeking to end gender-affirming care for minors, the Illinois attorney general issued a statement Wednesday saying the state will protect such care.

U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi delivered a stern warning to sanctuary cities during an appearance on Hannity on Fox News Thursday, vowing legal repercussions for jurisdictions that refuse to comply with federal immigration laws.

Although the department historically has insisted on remaining independent of the White House, Bondi made clear that she was working to overhaul a DOJ that Trump has insisted is both biased against him and against political conservatives in general.

Federal lawsuit challenges Illinois' sanctuary state laws that limit local law enforcement cooperation with federal immigration authorities

The U.S. Department of Justice sued Illinois and the city of Chicago on Thursday, accusing them of impeding the Trump administration's immigration enforcement policies and seeking a court order sweeping aside so-called sanctuary laws.

The federal lawsuit is the first by Trump's Justice Department against states or municipalities that have sanctuary city policies.
