Humana Inc. raised its profit guidance for the year on Wednesday, bucking a trend in the US health insurance industry after most other companies cut their forecasts in recent months.

The Kentucky-based company’s results are a bright spot in what’s otherwise been a gloomy quarter for health insurers. Humana says it has a handle on snowballing medical costs after taking a conservative stance heading into the year.

Humana raised its annual profit forecast on Wednesday, as the U.S. health insurer bets on its efforts to rein in higher medical costs that have plagued the sector, sending its shares up nearly 5% in premarket trading.
