Giving up alcohol for 31 days is associated with numerous health benefits. But for a growing number of adults, saving money is a top motivator.

Many people are now into the second week of their New Year’s Resolution, including some who have cut out drinking alcohol, but only for the month of January.

According to Harvard Health, heavier drinking or long-term drinking can increase physical and mental problems, especially among older adults. Heart and liver damage, a higher cancer risk, a weakened immune system, memory issues, and mood disorders are common issues, health officials said.
