July's weather was indeed unusually cool, but the average high in May and June in Redding was well above the normal for those months.

The weather service issued a winter storm warning, in effect from 4 p.m. Friday until 10 p.m. Saturday; and a strong wind advisory, in effect from 10 p.m. Friday until noon on Saturday.

Thursday will be a cloudy, windy day in Redding and Shasta Lake, according to Anderson. Temperatures drop to a cool 57 degrees before dawn and won’t go above 83 degrees Thursday afternoon.

While Redding temperatures seldom dip below 30, it does happen. According to the weather service, the mercury dropped to a record-setting 16 degrees on Dec. 9, 2009, and again on Jan 17, 2012.

Winter weather returns to Redding, Interstate 5 and Highway 299 this week. Snow, rain and strong winds could cause flooding, forecasts say.

North of Redding, those wind gusts grow stronger — up to 60 mph — at Weed on Monday night and early Tuesday morning, the weather service reported.

Redding will be mostly dry and sunny in early November. After Nov. 9, a few rain showers pop up throughout the rest of the month, according to the Old Farmer’s Almanac.
