CHIPPEWA COUNTY, Wis. (WEAU) - The Wisconsin DNR is bringing awareness to Chronic Wasting Disease found in Chippewa County. The DNR has been testing for CWD since 1999. The 2024 hunting season was the first time a wild deer in Chippewa County tested positive for CWD. The deer was harvested by a hunter who submitted it for sampling.

Tests have found a deer acting strangely in the Philipsburg area in January did not have chronic wasting disease.

Sixty positive cases of Chronic Wasting Disease in deer were detected during surveillance conducted in eastern Nebraska during the November firearm deer season, Nebraska Game and Parks states.
