The Office of the Inspector General is investigating after a Waterbury police detective was shot in the thigh while investigating attempted carjackings in Waterbury last week and fired back but did not hit the suspect,

In the first attempted carjacking, Waterbury Lt. Ryan Bessette said a suspect pointed a gun at the victim’s head and demanded they exit the vehicle, but the victim managed to drive away. In the second incident, multiple suspects who were armed with firearms exited a Ford Explorer and demanded the victim’s car keys, Bessette said.

A Waterbury police detective is recovering after he was shot in the upper thigh while investigating attempted carjackings in Waterbury on Thursday night, police said. Three suspects have been arrested and appeared in court on Friday.
