The wildfire that destroyed a Grand Canyon lodge this month was the latest blow to the National Park Service staffing and funding cuts.

A wildfire has forced the Grand Canyon National Park’s North Rim to close for the rest of the 2025 season and destroyed the lodge located in the park, a historic landmark, the National Park Service said.

U.S. land managers have long known that they have a problem on their hands with overgrown forests and persistent drought.

The Dragon Bravo Fire started on July 4 and was managed at first as a controlled burn. Then the wind picked up, and it quickly became uncontrollable.
