President Donald Trump's administration has scaled back a key U.S. government report on human rights worldwide, dramatically softening criticism of some countries that have been strong partners of the Republican president.

The report, an annual U.S. government account of human rights conditions in countries around the globe, typically comes out in February or March. A senior State Department official explained that the later release date was due to the transition of power from the Biden administration to the Trump administration.
