In a slightly surprising outcome, the Madisonville resident and LSU product was selected No. 3 overall by the Seattle Mariners in the Major League Baseball Draft on July 13. Many mock drafts had the 21-year-old left-hander going to the Washington Nationals with the first overall pick.

Per MLB.com's Daniel Kramer, the Mariners and LSU star pitcher Kade Anderson agreed on a signing bonus worth around $8.8 million. That signing bonus is $700,000 lower than the slot value for the No. 3 pick, Kramer noted, so Seattle will get some flexibility with the leftover money.
